Do I need a prescription for Physical Therapy?

New Jersey is a direct access state that empowers patient/clients to obtain physical therapy services without a prescription. Patients also have the ability to choose where to get physical therapy services from. This means if you have conditions that cause pain, stiffness, weakness and poor conditioning that limits your movement or physical function, we may be able to help you!

We deem as best practice to  have a collaborative practice model involving all health care practitioners providing care to the patient/client. Our PT practice will coordinate and communicate the PT plan of care to all professions and disciplines necessary to attain patient/client goals with patient/client consent.

Some insurance companies may require a prescription for medical necessity to pay for PT services, and we will be happy to assist you to obtain certification from your doctor or health provider of choice.

What happens during my first visit?

Initial evaluations and treatments are typically 60 minutes. After filling out demographic, administrative and clinical paperwork, the examination, evaluation, classification of function/PT diagnosis, prognostication, and formulation of a PT treatment program will be given. We ask you to wear loose/comfortable clothing that allows access to the body part being treated.

Patient/client goals are an integral part of the PT plan of care, guided by the expertise of a Doctor of Physical Therapy to address movement dysfunction and enable long-term, improved quality of life. This includes how many times you should see the therapist per week, how many weeks you will need therapy, home programs, patient education, short-term/long-term goals, and what is expected after discharge from therapy. This plan is created with input from you, your therapist, and your doctor.

How long is a typical Physical Therapy treatment session? Who is going to work with me?

Typical PT sessions are 45 minutes in length, which maybe longer or shorter contingent upon patient/client endurance and exercise/activity tolerance.

Our practice strongly believes that optimum physical therapy services can only be given by fully licensed and competent physical therapists and physical therapy assistants, and will not employ any PT "aides" or "technicians" to provide any and all direct patient care. As a sidebar, the regulations of the NJ Board of Physical Therapy also expressly prohibits non-PTs or PTAs providing patient care (13:39-2.4A). We recommend that patient/clients ask if the physical therapy office they go to is in compliance with this regulation from the NJ State Practice Act.

What are Doctors of Physical Therapy?

The Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) is a post baccalaureate degree conferred upon successful completion of a doctoral level professional (entry-level) or post professional education program. The specific nomenclature "DPT" is not a substitute or alternative for the physical therapist clinical designator "PT" that can be used only as a licensed physical therapist when successfully passing a national licensing examination and meeting the state requirements in which you practice (American Physical Therapy Association).

The bottom-line benefit for the patient/client is that working with a physical therapist with a DPT combines an experienced clinician (in our case, more than ten years of experience) with the most up-to-date knowledge and skill-set that the physical therapy profession has to offer.


How much are your Fees and do you take insurance?

We are proud to be a Medicare Part B participating provider.

We participate in most major medical care plans. In order to provide you high quality care, our practice elects to be Out of Network Providers for major medical insurers and all other payer types. Since the treatment plan of patients are rendered without the high volume of patients seen with traditional outpatient clinics, the total amount of visits and overall costs is usually less than conventional treatment.

Our practice would be glad to assist you in coordinating your insurance benefits.

We encourage those with limited or without health insurance benefits to still contact our office. Alternative options will be shared on how to obtain the care that is needed to restore motion and long-term quality of life. Prompt pay service discounts, prevention/maintenance/wellness programs, or referrals to community resources that best address your current medical and financial circumstances are part of our credo to promote accessibility to health care for all members of our community.
